Before You See A Southern California Chiropractor READ THIS!

Frequently Asked Questions About
Chiropractic Care And Salse Chiropractic Center
___________________________________

Q: How do I know if I need chiropractic care?
A: We offer a free initial consultation to find out if chiropractic care is appropriate for you. We don’t want to waste your time or money.  If we accept you as a patient, it means there is a very good chance we can help you.  If not, we will help you find a qualified referral.

Q: What about my insurance?
A:
We accept most insurances including HMO/PPO, auto insurance Med Pay, and Medi-care. If we are not on your insurance list, chances are we are still in your network. Our office will verify coverage to determine your benefits at no charge to you.

Q: How can I afford it?
A: For our chiropractic patients: We've never turned away a patient because of money, but we have turned them away if they were not committed to their health. If you desire to be seen in this office, most of the time we can work with your finances and still stay in “fair exchange”.

Q: What other treatment do you offer? A:
Our goal is to provide our patients with the best natural healing available through chiropractic care. We also offer massage therapy and acupuncture.   When the need arises, we are fortunate to affiliate with a local surgery center and a group of highly skilled doctors available for our patients. We refer for pain management, orthopedics, neurology, podiatry, and internal medicine. We also have in-house NCV/EMG testing, bone density scanning, and x-ray. When necessary, medical doctor we affiliate with perform coloscopy, endoscopy, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and a number of other procedures.

Q: Do you offer transportation? A: For special procedures such as colonoscopy, pain management and plastic surgery, the surgery center provides a stretch limosine is available free of charge.

Q: Does Dr. Salse twist the neck and make rough adjustments?
A:
No!!! - The Activator, Gonstead, Thompson, Diversified and upper cervical methods are very gentle and specific as practiced in our office.

Q: Honestly, will it really help?
A: Only a trial period of care will determine if you will respond but in most cases, patients experience positive results no matter their age or level of infirmity. Many patients come to us when traditional medicine has failed them.  If you have given up and feel there is no hope, DON'T GIVE UP and give us a call.  See our success stories.

Q: I heard that if you start you have to keep going?
A:Those that “keep going” do so for the same reason they “keep going” to the dentist – for their best health. Most regular Chiropractic patients feel better report to us that don’t get sick as often.  Many celebrities and professional athletes receive wellness care through chiropractic for optimum health.  Shouldn’t you do the same?

Q: Does it hurt?
A: Adjustments should not hurt. However, there could occasionally be some mild discomfort.

Q: Can it help my other conditions (other than neck or back pain)?

A: Most patients obtain more relief than expected as the body heals all over, not just the area of complaint.

Q: My M.D. said Chiropractic would hurt me and is not appropriate.
A: The best judge of whether Chiropractic might place you at risk is a state licensed Chiropractor. In almost all cases, with careful methods, patients can receive chiropractic care. Our patients range from one to one-hundred and it helps many of them.  We find that there are still those older or uneducated medical doctors that have not been exposed to the latest research on the benefits of chiropractic care.

Q: I get relief sometimes when I “adjust myself”. Do I really need Chiropractic?
A: Most patients are able to generate some noise from stretching joints. Unfortunately, the joints most critical to move for optimal health are rarely the ones patients can move.  If you feel the need to “crack” your neck or back several times a day, be sure to get checked by a chiropractor

Q: Why should I have my kids checked?
A: Birth trauma and the 2000 falls it takes to learn to walk start the spine off on the wrong track… and it grows worse from there. Children respond much faster than adults with Chiropractic care. We highly recommend all children be checked.  In our office, children of all ages are welcome.

Q: What if I am already injured and too weak. How can I be helped? A: Dr. Salse has experience with thousands of patients, many who started off in very poor condition. It may require special care, but most patients can be helped with corrective chiropractic. Visit our testimonials page.

Q: I’m pregnant, can I be helped?
A: Yes. Dr. has experience with hundreds of women who were pregnant and adjusted them following delivery. Careful chiropractic care from an experienced doctor can help alleviate the discomfort of pregnancy. Chiropractic offers an alternative to analgesic medication to aid in the discomfort of pregnancy.

More from the American Chiropractic Association:

What conditions do chiropractors treat?
Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions.  DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches...particularly with their highly skilled  manipulations or chiropractic adjustments. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints.  These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury.  The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues, as well, since our body structure affects our overall function. DCs also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupationaland lifestyle modification.

How do I select a doctor of chiropractic?
One of the best ways to select a doctor of chiropractic (DC) is by getting a referral from a friend, family member, colleague, or another health care provider.

Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?
A referral is usually not needed to see a doctor of chiropractic (DC); however, your health plan may have specific referral requirements. You may want to contact your employer’s human resources department—or the insurance plan directly—to find out if there are any referral requirements. Most plans allow you to just call and schedule an appointment with a DC.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current literature shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.
Neck pain and some types of headaches are treated through precise cervical manipulation. Cervical manipulation, often called a neck adjustment, works to improve joint mobility in the neck, restoring range of motion and reducing muscle spasm, which helps relieve pressure and tension. Neck manipulation is a remarkably safe procedure. While some reports have associated upper high-velocity neck manipulation with a certain kind of stroke, or vertebral artery dissection, recent evidence suggests that this type of arterial injury often takes place spontaneously, or following everyday activities such as turning the head while driving, swimming, or having a shampoo in a hair salon. Patients with this condition may experience neck pain and headache that leads them to seek professional care—often at the office of a doctor of chiropractic or family physician—but that care is not the cause of the injury. The best evidence indicates that the incidence of artery injuries associated with high-velocity upper neck manipulation is extremely rare – about 1 case in 5.85 million manipulations.
If you are visiting your doctor of chiropractic with upper-neck pain or headache, be very specific about your symptoms. This will help your doctor of chiropractic offer the safest and most effective treatment, even if it involves referral to another health care provider.
It is important for patients to understand the risks associated with some of the most common treatments for musculoskeletal pain -- prescription and over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) -- as these treatments may carry risks significantly greater than those of chiropractic manipulation. According to a study from the American Journal of Gastroenterology, approximately one-third of all hospitalizations and deaths related to gastrointestinal bleeding can be attributed to the use of aspirin or NSAID painkillers like ibuprofen.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?
Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

Are chiropractors allowed to practice in hospitals or use medical outpatient facilities?
Chiropractors are being recognized to admit and treat patients in hospitals and to use outpatient clinical facilities (such as labs, x-rays, etc.) for their non-hospitalized patients.  Hospital privileges were first granted in 1983.

Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others. Chiropractic care is also available to active-duty members of the armed forces at more than 60 military bases and is available to veterans at 36 major veterans medical facilities.

What type of education and training do chiropractors have?
Doctors of chiropracticare educated as primary-contact health care providers, with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system (the muscles, ligaments and joints of the spine and extremities) and the nerves that supply them. Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions.
The typical applicant for chiropractic college has already acquired nearly four years of pre-medical undergraduate college education, including courses in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, psychology and related lab work. Once accepted into an accredited chiropractic college, the requirements become even more demanding — four to five academic years of professional study are the standard. Doctors of chiropractic are educated in orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, clinical diagnosis including laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutrition rehabilitation and more.
Because chiropractic care includes highly skilled manipulation/adjusting techniques, a significant portion of time is spent in clinical technique training to master these important manipulative procedures.
In total, the chiropractic college curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. The course of study is approved by an accrediting agency that is fully recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

How is a chiropractic adjustment performed?
Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands--or an instrument--to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient's pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?
The hands-on nature of the chiropractic treatment is essentially what requires patients to visit the chiropractor a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractor, a patient needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits sometimes necessary.  Your doctor of chiropractic should tell you the extent of treatment recommended and how long you can expect it to last.

Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

If You Don't Want To Be Fat and Have Diabetes That Causes Blindness Read This:

Sugar, in its many forms, is an
increasingly common ingredient
in processed foods. Many of us
eat the equivalent of 53
teaspoons of white sugar every
day!
Here are ten reasons to avoid
refined (white) sugar:
1. Sugar contributes to tooth
decay.
2. Sugar causes the body to
release more adrenalin, which
may explain hyperactivity in
young children.
3. Calcium loss occurs when a
person drinks a soft drink
containing sugar.
4. Diabetes results when the
pancreas can no longer eliminate
sugar from the blood stream.
5. When white refined sugar is
exposed to certain organic
compounds it converts to dioxin,
a lethal compound.
6. Sugar can hinder weight loss
because high insulin levels cause
the body to retain excess
carbohydrates as fat.
7. Sugar increases the likelihood
of chronic fatigue.
8. Sugar increases mood swings,
irritability and anxiety.
9. Sugar compromises the
immune system because it lowers
the efficiency of white blood cells
for a minimum of five hours after
ingesting the sugar.
10. Eating sugar can decrease
helpful high-density cholesterol
(HDLs) and result in an increase
in harmful cholesterol (LDLs).
Need to sweeten your food?
Raisins, dates or honey are safe
and simple alternatives that can
satisfy any sweet tooth!

Mr. Robert Ramirez: THANK YOU! (Patient Of The Month)

Robert Ramirez
Patient of the Month

Over the last eighteen years in practice, I have had the honor and privilege to meet some incredible and special people.  One of those is Robert "Bob" Ramirez.  Bob was referred to me by his daughter Adrianna back in 1997.  Not only does he continue to be a regular patient, he has referred more patients than any other patient.  In fact, he is responsible for our office seeing 300 patients thanks to him.  A retired Amtrak employee, he paved the way for Salse Chiropractic Center to be a trusted facility that is routinely invited to Amtrak employee events.  Like so many of our patients he is considered a good friend.

Going to a chiropractor shouldn't be like going to your medical doctor.  Patients like Bob come in not because they are sick but because they want to stay well and healthy.  They have the "Chiropractic Lifestyle". Working out, eating right and getting regular adjustments are a big part of their lives.

If your chiropractor doesn't know your name, you feel treated like a number, and you're not under an affordable wellness plan, we invite you to experience the difference at Salse Chiropractic Center in Monrovia.

Can Stretching Increase The Risk Of Injury?

This headline is not an error. If not done properly, stretching can actually increase the risk of injury. Virtually everyone can recall your physical education teacher having the class stretch before an activity. It has been ingrained into our memory that stretching before beginning an activity is a good thing. Can it be possible that we have been misled all these years? The answer is yes!

We have thought that stretching before exercise allowed the muscles to loosen up, stretch out, and prepare for a vigorous workout. Intuitively, it would make sense that stretching wakes up the muscles. According to numerous studies, the type of stretching that the average person does, called static stretching, is bad for your muscles unless they are already warmed up. A 1999 study (Johnasson etc al.) found that before exercising static stretching “has no preventive effect on the muscular soreness, tenderness and force loss that follows heavy eccentric exercise.” Another study determined that static stretching in itself causes injuries. The runner’s stretch, where the athlete does a push up and inverts the head so that the feet touch the ground, is an example of a static exercise which is actually harmful.

Warm Up Exercise

A warm up exercise is recommended prior to stretching. Warming up has many benefits including increased muscle temperature. Warming up can be done with simple calisthenics. The rise in muscle temperature helps to enhance the mechanical efficiency of moving muscles. A 15-minute warm up, consisting of range of motion exercises that involve rotating the hips, bending the knees, ankles and shoulders, is recommended. The increased metabolic rate during a warm up increases the efficiency of substrates that provide energy for physical activity. It should be noted that a warm up should not be done more than 45 minutes before the activity is scheduled to begin. The reason for this is that the body temperature returns to normal within this timeframe.

Most patients who are undergoing any type of rehabilitation perform a warm up exercise prior to therapy. A warm up is effective in minimizing the risk of injury to the muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments. For rehabilitation patients, the duration and intensity of the warm up should be designed for each patient’s needs and limitations.

Is there any safe type of stretching?

If you absolutely need to stretch after your warm up, then try dynamic stretching. Dynamic stretching is stretching with a constant movement and motion. For example, lifting your leg in the air, and touching your toes as you lift. Dynamic stretching does not include any bouncing movements, only smooth controlled range of motion movements.

A good dynamic stretch will only work one muscle group at a time. For example, it is better to stretch one hamstring at a time, not two. By isolating the muscle, you have better focus and less resistance from other muscle groups. You also have more control of the movement and can experience a greater range of motion. Think about doing a split. It involves several muscle groups at the same time, and each provides its own resistance. In addition, you have no real control as you attempt the split.

It should be noted that breathing is important for a successful stretch. Breathing increases blood flow throughout the body and relaxes the body. Slow and controlled breaths are recommended, as well as exhaling as you stretch.  You should inhale through the nose and expand the abdomen, not the lungs. Then, exhale slowly through the mouth. Inhaling through the nose ensures the proper temperature for oxygen transfer in the lungs.

As you can see, a warm up exercise is the safest way to begin any activity, not a stretch. Dynamic stretching can be incorporated into an exercise routine after the warm up. Remember to breathe and have slow and controlled movements. It is recommended that you speak with your doctor or chiropractor before changing or beginning an exercise routine. This will ensure that you are taking your exercise in the right direction and will reduce your chances for injury.

Chiropractors are the experts in range of motion, physiology, and the musculoskeletal system. Consulting with a chiropractor to develop an exercise program is a proactive approach to wellness, which makes more sense than seeing one after you are injured.  A chiropractor can work with you to design a personal warm up and exercise routine for your body. They will perform a thorough assessment of your body, including past injuries and illnesses. The chiropractor will design a beginning, intermediate and advanced training plan. If you are beginning an exercise plan for the first time or after an injury, the chiropractor may only feel comfortable designing a beginning plan and adjusting it once you have made progress. If you choose your own exercise plan, be sure to include a warm up to reduce injury and a cool down activity for after your exercise session as well.

Pregnant? The Benefits Of Chiropractic Care For You And Your Baby

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Over the last eighteen years, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of future moms get through their pregnancy with natural chiropractic care.  Not only did I help with all five of my children, but I had the unique opportunity to work with an OB/GYN who recommended chiropractic to all of his patients.  Here in Monrovia, we have an active women's exercise class just for pregnant moms.  Because I was able to help the instructor, we have received several referrals from her over the years.
Pregnancy is a memorable and significant time in a woman’s life.  Emotional ups and downs, fatigue and a body that seems to change overnight are all parts of the wonder of pregnancy.  Though pregnancy offers plenty of opportunities for joy and excitement, it also comes with its fair share of aches and pains.  Gentle chiropractic care during pregnancy can help alleviate many of the less pleasant aspects of a changing body and help moms-to-be enjoy a more peaceful, pain-free pregnancy.
We have all witnessed that special glow that an expecting mother seems to radiate.  Pregnancy is a special time in a woman’s life, and there is much anticipation and happy moments associated with pregnancy that help contribute to that glow.  Unfortunately, pregnancy can wreak havoc on a woman’s body in countless ways, and aches, pains, nausea, fatigue and weariness can be par for the course.  The good news is that chiropractic care during pregnancy can help alleviate many of pregnancy’s less enjoyable symptoms, such as:
  • Morning sickness
  • Aching back
  • Sciatica pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Pelvic and postural problems due to baby’s growth

Chiropractic care is safe, proven, drug-free relief for moms-to-be!
Chiropractors are specially trained to treat and care for pregnant women.  We understand the unique physical needs many women encounter, whether it is their first pregnancy, or their fourth.  The human female was specially designed to accommodate a growing baby, and we help assist Mother Nature as she works her magic and transforms the bodies of both mother and child.  We know that the changes of pregnancy can have unpleasant side-effects, and we offer gentle, safe and reliable chiropractic adjustments that can relieve pain, improve posture, reduce labor and delivery time and even help prevent a Cesarean section!
There is chiropractic care especially for expectant mothers
Our goal is to partner with you in life-long care of your spine, and we offer help and service through every season of life.  Pregnancy, especially, is a time during which changes happen quickly and back, neck and sciatic nerve pain are common.  Chiropractic care can be specifically tailored to the unique needs of pregnant woman, and we offer many tailored treatments and options that customize care for our expectant patients:
  • Adjustable treatment tables to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Specialized adjustment procedures that protect the abdomen while targeting sore areas.
  • Soothing and gentle massage that relieve stress and promotes relaxation.
  • Spinal care after birth to help new moms feel their best.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help expectant moms to eliminate many common pregnancy complaints, from morning sickness to back pain.  Though chiropractic care may seem to deal only with the spine, the truth is that spinal manipulation impacts the health of the entire body.  Seeking chiropractic care during pregnancy is a proven and safe way to help make those nine months as enjoyable as possible.
Call our office today to find out more about chiropractic care during pregnancy and ways that we can help you feel your best, both before and after baby’s arrival.  (626) 256-3422.  Most insurance plans are accepted.

The Top 5 Medical Mistakes Made After A Car Accident And How To Avoid Them.

ATTENTION: Talk to an experienced attorney and/or chiropractor about your recent auto accident now. (626) 256-3422.

You’re in pain. Your car is a mess. You can’t work. You can’t take care of your family. A car accident right now is the last thing you need. Who do you trust? Everyone seems to know an attorney for you to see. The adjuster for the other insurance company is very nice but wants to record you. You have a lot of questions and this isn’t the time to make a mistake. You want to get better, get your car fixed and get back to your life as soon as possible.

How do I know this? I’ve helped over 10,000 auto accident patients in the last eighteen years steer through the rocky waters of personal injury and med-legal problems. Rest assured, with the right advice from the right people, you will get through this.

But you don’t know me and this isn’t the time to take a chance on the wrong doctor. That is why I recommend that you do your research. Google my name, David M. Salse, DC or go to MonroviaChiropractic.com/blog and look for “Real Chiropractor/Real Reviews”. There you will find a compilation of reviews about me from around the web.

Patients tell me they didn’t want to come in because they didn’t want a medical bill. There are several ways to get your medical care without spending a penny. Many are surprised to find out that their auto insurance may cover the entire cost for treatment through what is called Med-Pay. In addition, the insurance company of the person that hit you will take care of the medical expenses. Medical insurance also covers chiropractic care and finally, an attorneys lien means your chiropractor agrees to wait for payment from the attorney when the case settles.

The longer one waits to get treated, the longer it takes to recover. In addition, the third party insurance company (the insurance of the people who hit you) love when you don’t go to the doctor right away. I have seen them use that against patients when it comes time to settle or even to accept liability.

The top five medical mistakes patient make when involved in a car accident:

1. Seeing the wrong type of doctor. Auto accident injuries must be treated correctly. Many physicians don’t know how to manage personal injury treatment or the case. They do not want to get involved in depositions or called into court to testify as an expert witness on your behalf. Most do not know about Colossus or how to write a med-legal report. Treating with the wrong doctor could potentially ruin your med-legal case.

2. Getting the wrong treatment. Unfortunately, many medical doctors will prescribe pain killers and muscle relaxants without prescribing natural chiropractic care or physical therapy. The medication, does in fact help with the pain, but it only masks the symptoms. Medication does nothing to aid in correcting the loss of the cervical curve due to spasms, or to address the scar tissue and adhesions in the muscle or to consider the long-terms affects of neuromusculoskeletal injury in years to come.

3. The six most common words in my office, “I Thought It Would Go Away”. Whether you have mild or major pain.  One of the biggest mistakes patients make after an auto accident is waiting to see if the pain will go away. Left unchecked, misaligned vertebrae may cause decades of poor health.  It is extremely important to at least get checked by a chiropractor. Not only can a chiropractor help you now, your investment in care may help avoid health problems in the future.   Sometimes patients feel fine immediately after an accident. Many times this is because of the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism that produces adrenaline. However, when the adrenaline wears down, the pain can come on days or weeks following an accident. Even if you have no pain, it is important to at least get checked to make sure your spine was not traumatized without you knowing it. Even if I get injured, I can’t check my own back and I will see a chiropractor to make sure my alignment is proper.

4. Getting the wrong or incomplete diagnosis. Your ER or HMO doctor has given you a diagnosis of muscle strain. Did he or she take an x-ray? Did they palpate your spine for misalignments (subluxations)? Did they do a neurological, orthopedic and chiropractic exam on you? Did they even touch you? A good chiropractor will not only be looking for muscle strain, but also conditions like traumatic carpal tunnel syndrome, acute TMJ, double crush neuropathy, radiculitis, sciatica, cervicogenic headaches and many more.

5. Treating with a new or inexperienced chiropractor. Not all chiropractors are the same. Some specialize in pediatrics while others specialize in nutrition or sports injuries. Having a seasoned veteran personal injury chiropractor on your side will not only insure you are getting the experienced treatment, you can rest assured that your chiropractor will confidently testify on your behalf if need be.
